Featherstone Flyers 0 Goole Town Tigers Girls Under-10s 10
Goole Town Tigers Girls Under-10s made the relatively short - for them anyway - trip to Featherstone recently to take on the Flyers in their first game since the Christmas break looking to continue their six-match unbeaten run.
Goole started slowly but went ahead halfway through the first quarter when Lexi Cawkwell’s corner appeared to go in off a defender, but she claimed the goal. After that, and despite not being at their flowing best, Goole took a firm grip on the game and soon after Cawkwell’s cross found top scorer Sophie Gray at the far post and she duly obliged to double the advantage. Goole continued their dominance in the second quarter with goalkeeper Ava Sheldon, and the defensive rotation of Lilly Rockett, Olivia Young-Williams, Marcie Masterman, Maisie Jessop, and Anastasija Igaune concentrating hard to get the ball back quickly and repel the fleeting Featherstone attacks. Goole added a third just before half time when Maegan Oldridge’s quick feet and pass found Lexi Cawkwell who beautifully curled the ball into the far corner from the edge of the area. Into the second half and Goole stepped it up again, with Oldridge adding her first of the afternoon breaking away down the right from a Gray pass and firing passed the keeper.
First Cawkwell and then Oldridge turned providers as Gray latched on to two through balls to add to her earlier strike to complete her hat-trick to leave the score 6-0 at the end of the third quarter. Despite the Flyers playing the final quarter with an extra player it was the Tigers who continued to pile forward led by Alicia Fallon who was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with the Featherstone keeper holding some type of vendetta against the Goole player. Sheldon gave up the gloves for an outfield run in the final part of the game and she was soon involved slipping a lovely ball through to Iris Whitfield whose energy and power from midfield became a growing influence as the game went on to add number seven. Oldridge added her second of the game after running over half the length before firing past a beleaguered keeper and soon after Sheldon put her name on the scoresheet after a defensive mix-up. Goole’s defence continued to hold firm right to the end and from a final breakaway Cawkwell smashed home to take the score into double figures. Despite this only being Goole’s twelfth game as a team, the improvement seen has been superb. Goole have a bye next week before taking on familiar foes Horsforth Huskies at West Park the week after.
